CFTC Announces Appointment of Terry Arbit as General Counsel

Washington, DC – The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced today the appointment of Terry S. Arbit as General Counsel. Mr. Arbit has been serving as the CFTC’s Acting General Counsel and as Deputy General Counsel for Regulation and Administration. Prior to that, Mr. Arbit served as Counsel to former CFTC Chairman Reuben Jeffery III.

    “I am pleased to bring someone with Terry’s knowledge of our law and breadth of experience to the role of General Counsel,” said CFTC Acting Chairman Walter Lukken. “I have complete confidence that Terry will continue providing sage counsel to the Commission as we address a broad range of issues affecting the growing and ever-changing futures industry.”

Mr. Arbit received joint M.A. and B.A. degrees in 1980 from the University of Pennsylvania (Summa Cum Laude) and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1983. After graduating from law school, Mr. Arbit clerked for the Honorable Charles L. Levin of the Supreme Court of Michigan. He has been practicing law in private practice and government service for more than 22 years, spending the last 11 years at the CFTC in a variety of legal capacities.
