Statement of Chairman Heath P. Tarbert on SEC Chairman Jay Clayton
November 16, 2020
Washington, D.C. — Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Heath P. Tarbert released the following statement regarding SEC Chairman Jay Clayton’s announcement of his future plans:
“It has been an honor to serve alongside Jay Clayton. He is one of the smartest and most capable transactional attorneys in the country and an even better colleague and friend. As leaders of the SEC and CFTC, we have worked together closely to harmonize our rules where appropriate and hold wrongdoers accountable.
“We have also made history and responded to it, holding the first ever joint open meeting of our two agencies to vote on a final rule. When our markets confronted historic volatility earlier this year due to the pandemic, Jay and I worked closely together—both bilaterally and as members of the President’s Working Group on Financial Markets—to promote liquidity and orderly trading.
“We also coordinated extensively on international issues to promote a unified view of U.S. interests affecting our nation’s financial markets, including at international fora such as the International Organization of Securities Commissions and the Financial Stability Board.
“Accordingly, I am pleased to announce I will be awarding Jay the CFTC Chairman’s Award for Regulatory Excellence for having embodied the principles of sound regulation throughout his tenure. As Jay concludes his historic run at the SEC and prepares to embark on his next journey, I wish him and his family the very best.”
